Lend a Hand Day

Lend a hand Julie doing some gardeningLend a hand Julie with the lady whose garden she was trimmingAge Concern in conjunction with Rotary clubs in Milton Keynes set up a yearly event to help senior citizens with small domestic jobs.

Six volunteers from our club joined the fray and duly picked up our ‘to do’ lists. We had a variety of jobs, fridge cleaning, window washing, weeding, trips to the dump, pond clearing and general tidying up.

We enjoyed numerous cups of tea and were welcomed and charmed by the gratitude from people who were very grateful. We will certainly be back next year.

Wettest Marathon EVER

photo-1April 2012 048

Milton Keynes hosted its' first Marathon and frankly we were not dealt the best hand for this first time event. It must have been the wettest day in the UK for several years.

So the Rotary Club of the Brickhills agreed to be responsible for Water Station Number 25 on the route which was run mostly on the glorious Redways of MK. Station 25 was just a mile from the end of the Marathon which ended with a circuit of the 'stadium:mk'.

The Big Spring Clean

Some of the bags of litter collectedCollecting litter in Grange Farm Milton Keynes

Saturday 21st April we were only just spared the April showers, for which we were very thankful as 12 of us including lots of willing children and one local scout, gathered at Grange Farm in Milton Keynes to collect litter in the redways surrounding the shops. We gave ourselves a 2 hour window to collect the rubbish and surpirsed ourselves by collecting over 24 bags of recyclable material and combustable rubbish.

Two members of the public stopped us to say how grateful they were that we were performing this task for their community and one popped across to the shops and returned with a box of chocolates for us. What a wonderful gesture, Thank you Sir!!! Then off home for a well deserved lunch. Thank you Sarah for organising this event, one I think we would be happy to repeat.

Building and Flattening at the Mayday Trust

Building the BBQRotary Club of the Brickhills discussion on how best to move the soilBank Holiday Sunday saw the members of the club and friends digging, shovelling, bricklaying and sweeping. The mayday trust in Leighton Buzzard needed a BBQ building out of bricks and a HUGE mound of soil and rubble flattening. Nine members and friends Stephen Clarke and Graham Arnold added their expertise to the seven members who gave of their time and brawn.

It was hard work but some of the residents came out and joined in digging and moving soil. It was day of good fun and spirits. The Mayday Trust provides specialised support, life-skills training and accommodation for vulnerable adults. We support people who find it difficult to manage everyday living and need help or support in developing those skills.

Clients include young people leaving care, those with moderate learning difficulties and recurring mental health problems, victims of abuse, ex-offenders, those with a history of substance misuse and victims of family breakdown.

Charity Bazaar in the HUB

Sarah and Helen at the stall run by the Rotary Club of the Brickhills

playing rouletteSunday 24th July was a beautiful day but the week before had been very wet so a marquee was set up in the Hub for the Charity stall owners to share their wares, publicity ideas and with the public. Our club led by Sarah set up our trade mark roulette stall to attract visitors and let them know what we are doing in the community for Milton Keynes and surrounding areas.

Helen gave an interview to the new local radio station MK:FM publicising our fun casinos for charity and reiterating that we are seeking active members who enjoy working in the community and have a good and active social life.

For more information about hiring us for a fun casino see our casino page here. To see all the images for this event please click here

ASTRA Bow Brickhill and TEDDIES

Teddy tombola for Bow Brickhill church fund

Sarah, Ali and Lesley set up the Rotary Gazebo in a torrential downpour hoping to sell soft toys for ASTRA Bow Brickhill, and Brickhills Rotary. The Teddy Tombolla was well attended by the local firefighters and the local MP Iain Stewart. The local children clutched their winnings under their coats to join the chain of people passing the pound up the hill.

Over £600 was raised for the church steeple. We had a great time, everyone was cheerful and thoroughly wet!
