Elizabeth doing a presentation to a hall of 580 people about the Rotary Easter Showcase

Rotary International, around the world, has just under 530 districts. Each of these has a Governor, and it's his or her duty during their year of office to host a Conference. This is held so that Rotarians in the district, plus their guests can meet in one place to enjoy a weekend away, see old and new friends, be entertained and inspired.

In 2007/08, our governor Brian Doggrell, chose Bournemouth the home of Rotary in the UK as the town for Conference. It was a rainy and windy weekend but that did not dampen our spirits.

We were entertained by Graham Walton the father of the sextuplets, Lynn Faulds-Wood who spoke well about the her charity bowel cancer and brilliantly by the inspirational blind speed champion Steve Cunningham. Truly he was marvellous and there was not a dry eye in the house as he spoke with plenty of humour as well.

Elizabeth Sheldon gave a 20 minute presentation to the assembly about the Rotary Easter Showcase, which went down very well.

Conference 2006 Cardiff
Cardiff

The stand and Andy

In 2005/06, our governor Merion, chose the capital Cardiff as his venue. That was an easy choice as he is a Welshman! Clear of the rugby weekends by hosting it in April, a group of hotels around the city centre hosted a few hundred Rotary and guest delegates. The St David's Hall was the focal point of the weekend. During the day, there were speakers on stage from Rotary itself plus the arts and entertainment. There was a live demonstration of watercolour painting, the comedian Ray Allan and "Lord Charles", a talk about the local Police Helicopter, and funny stories from a former defence lawyer.

Conference is also an information exchange, and this year that Rotary clubs and project leaders for the first time, could put up stands during the session breaks. This was to inform delegates about the other clubs and what they have been doing and their plans for the future. The Brickhills had a stand with a summary of what our unique club is about, our casino events and taking part in "Make a Difference Day". The stand looked very good.

Welsh Singing
The evening entertainment

Those welsh voices, in "Brickhills Red" too !!!

The evening entertainment was also in St David's Hall, a military band on Friday and a great ABBA tribute group "Arrival" on Saturday. Without a formal dinner this year, some of our members, Andy Forgham his wife Laura and Sam Keen, met with friends from Hitchin Rotaract for dinner before the concert. The format of the weekend is such that it is left to each delegate to chose elements that suit them. Sam had a tour of the Millennium Stadium as part of hers.

Being in Wales, there had to be a song or two, and when we got a bit of help to sing the closing songs - the Male Voice choir from Meirion's home village walked on stage to his surprise - he was really delighted!

It is easy to sing the national anthem with that sort of help!

Our thanks to Andy Forgham for his report and for representing us at this annual event.
